How to add a quote widget to your iPhone Lock Screen

You look at your Lock Screen around a hundred times a day. A quote widget turns those glances into reminders.

To add a quote widget to your iPhone Lock Screen, install a quote app that offers Lock Screen widgets, then touch and hold your Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose the Lock Screen, tap the widget area below the time, and pick the app's widget. Lock Screen widgets need iOS 16 or later. For the Home Screen, touch and hold an empty spot, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose the app.

Add a quote widget to the Lock Screen

  1. Install a quote app with Lock Screen widgets (FURY, for example) and open it once so it can load your quotes.
  2. Lock your iPhone, wake the screen, and unlock with Face ID or Touch ID without leaving the Lock Screen.
  3. Touch and hold the Lock Screen until Customize appears, then tap it.
  4. Choose Lock Screen (on iOS 17 and later you are asked whether to customise the Lock Screen or Home Screen).
  5. Tap the box below the time to add a rectangular widget, or the date above the time for a single-line widget.
  6. Scroll the list to the quote app, tap it, and tap or drag the widget you want into place.
  7. Close the widget panel and tap Done.

The rectangular widget below the clock fits two or three lines, which is enough for most short quotes. The inline widget above the clock fits a few words.

Add a quote widget to the Home Screen

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-left corner, then Add Widget. (On older versions of iOS, tap the + button.)
  3. Search for the quote app, pick a size (small or medium suits quotes best), and tap Add Widget.
  4. Drag it where you want and tap Done.

How the FURY widget works

FURY has Lock Screen widgets (inline and rectangular) and Home Screen widgets (small and medium). The widget shows a new line every hour, picked from the topics you chose, like discipline, training, money or focus, and from any quotes you wrote yourself. Tap the widget to change its background in the app. The widget is part of FURY's subscription, which starts with a 3-day free trial.

Quote widget not updating? Try this

  • Open the app once. Widgets usually need the app to run at least once to load content.
  • Check Low Power Mode. iOS refreshes widgets less often when it is on.
  • Remove and re-add the widget. This clears a stuck widget more often than you would think.
  • Update the app and iOS. Widget bugs are often fixed in updates.
  • Restart the iPhone if a widget shows a blank or placeholder state.

Is there a free way to get quotes on the Lock Screen?

Yes: set a quote as your wallpaper. It does not change by itself, but it is free and works on any iPhone. You can download free motivational wallpapers here and follow how to set a motivational wallpaper on iPhone.

FAQ

Can I put a quote on my iPhone Lock Screen?

Yes, either with a Lock Screen widget from a quote app (iOS 16 or later) or by setting a wallpaper that has a quote on it.

Which iPhones support Lock Screen widgets?

Any iPhone running iOS 16 or later. Customising the Lock Screen arrived with iOS 16.

How often does a quote widget change?

It depends on the app. FURY shows a new quote every hour; iOS decides the exact refresh moment, so it can occasionally be a little late.
